Calcium Chloride is a highly soluble hygroscopic and exothermic in nature. Unlike the more commonly used sodium chloride, calcium chloride is relatively harmless to plants and soil which enables to be used as snow-thawing agent for highways, parking lots, airports and docks etc. As a firming agent calcium chloride is used in canned vegetables. It is commonly used as an electrolyte in sports drinks and other beverages. Calcium chloride is included as an additive in plastics and in fire extinguishers, in wastewater treatment as a drainage aid, in blast furnaces as an additive to control scaffolding and in fabric softener as a thinner.
